Vicente L. Rafael is Professor of History at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he received the Solomon Katz Distinguished Lecturer award in 2008.. Rafael has twice earned the Philippine National Book Award for History. First in 1989 for his book Contracting Colonialism: Translation and Christian Conversion in Tagalog Society under Early Spanish Rule, and again in 2000 for White Love and Other Events in Filipino History. His most recent book is The Promise of the Foreign: Nationalism and the Technics of Translation in the Spanish Philippines (2005). Rafael has also edited two volumes of essays: Discrepant Histories: Translocal Essays in Filipino Cultures (1995) and Figures of Criminality in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Colonial Vietnam (1999).
